If you had this fictious $100,000, what would you do with it?

A measly 100,000, that's it? Evil or Very Mad Can I even get a decent Ferrari? A Lamborghini Diablo. . . umm, er, no. Well, I guess if I'm limmited to a hundred grand I'll go cry myself to sleep in a new Jaguar XKR Convertible.

I love threads like this. The greatest part is that my mind changes all the time, so at the moment, here's what I'd go with.

  • 2004 Mustang Cobra Coupe
The way they're holding value, you'll probably find yourself dropping at least $25,000. But, it's money well spent, especially when you hear that supercharger scream! (This would make a great car for your next review btw). Wink

  • 1998 Ferrari 355 Spyder
After some careful shopping around, you might be able to find one for $75,000. They're drop-dead gorgeous and sound fantastic. One of the best Ferraris for the money today.

And if I was somehow able to spend less than $100,000 on these two beauties, I'd slap a shaker on the Cobra.

First, while from TX, I don't like big trucks or SUVs. So for my $100,000 garage, I would love the following.

Black VW R32 with a Twin Turbo kit. That's about $68k right there. It's a lot, but the ability to go 0-60 in 3.2 seconds in a sneaky fast way would be awesome.

So that's basically it. I've got a little over $30k left in the garage, what would I get. What can possibly be cool for a little over $30k that's not redundant with my imaginary R32?

This.

The frakin' Delorean DMC-12. As seen on autotrader for $28k. And the remaining $4k would go to putting the vents and a Mr Fusion on the back, a flux capacitor inside, and a bumper sticker that says "When this thing hits 88 mph you're going to see some serious sh*t."

I gotta say, I have one of the vehicles on my $100,000 garage list. Now I'm not one to keep any vehicle stock. I'm a firm believer in personalizing a vehicle by adding aftermarket performance/personalization products.

'07 Toyota Tacoma Double Cab $27K+$3K

My truck is perfect for my needs. It hauls everything I need for my weekend home improvement projects, does great off road and seats 5 semi-comfortably. And with a 3" lift and some looks pretty cool too. Yes, as anal as I am about keeping the truck immaculate, I actually use the off road capabilities and I'm not afraid of scratching it while wheeling. Add an additional $3000 for wheels, tires, and a slight lift.

VW GTI $20K + $5K
The car handles like it's on rails, has a plethora of aftermarket performance accessories available and is one of the best looking compact cars available. It be a great, inexpensive weekend track warrior.

BMW 5-Series ~50K
Great combination of luxury, safety and performance.

That's my list. If I had an impractical $100K to drop on one car, it'd be the Carerra 4S hands down. Bump it to ~$130K and it'd be the 911 turbo. Yes, even after I read (and wiped the splattered tomatos off the screen) the the ED take on the tired design.

For my 100k garage I too am allready almost there, I drive one of my dream cars, but getting it back to working properly is another matter entirely.

1992 Toyota Celica Alltrac - 20k.

At this point I allready own the car, so the money spent on it would be sourcing new and hard to find parts, like the TRD mechanical front and center diffs, and getting a quaife rear torsen diff. Plus new suspension, and a fatty garrett turbo charger, arp head bolts, etc. etc. etc. When it's done, the look on evo and STi Drivers faces will be priceless. (I JUST GOT BEAT BY A WHAAAAT?)

BMW 850csi.- 20k

This would be my cruiser. Comfortable, with enough power under the hood (provided you got the alusil cylinder sleeves) possibly with a supercharger, have the guys over a Dinan look at it, see what they have to say. Not much else needed here.

i got what, 60k left at this point?

Don't need a truck, my friends got a tow rig.

Don't need a sedan, kids get in the way of fun.

Bam!

Lotus Esprit. -60kl

Sexy as hell, lightweight and crisp handling, whats not to love?

As was mentioned earlier, my vehicle choices are almost continually changing, but for the moment, here's what I would get with my $100K...

#1- The daily driver/responsible car: 2008 VW Jetta Sportwagen diesel
No matter what your opinion may be on wagons, this car is going to kick ass! It should be comfortable, fast, and extremely efficient; early predictions are that it will get in the high 30s in the city and maybe even past 50 mpg on the highway. The wagon bodystyle allows you to transport an incredible amount of stuff, should the need arise. I'll take mine with the DSG transmission for my commute. Should only cost in the mid to high $20K range as well.

#2- The sports car: 2008 Chevy Corvette LS3
When considering bang for the buck value, nothing, I repeat, NOTHING comes close to the Chevy Corvette, especially now for 2008 that the base Corvette has a 430hp engine and improved steering and handling. For $46K! Sure, the interior is kind of cheap, but I don't care! For the kind of performance you get with the Vette, for how little you're paying, interior plastics should be the least of your worries. AND, best of all, you can send your Corvette to the wizards at Lingenfelter and for another 20 or 30 grand have a Ferrari slayer. Well, maybe not in handling, but in outright speed a Lingenfelter Corvette is stupid fast. However, I would stick with the basic Corvette and save my remaining $25 to $30K on my other automotive passion. Which leads me to...

#3- The offroader/hauler: 2006-2008 Nissan Frontier V6 4X4
Now, I love sports cars, and would own one over a pickup anyday. But if I've got a cool $100K, I'm getting a truck too! Going wheeling is often looked down upon these days as being irresponsible and environmentally unfriendly. Too damn bad. Having grown up within the vicinity of Hollister Hills has convinced me that every man ought to go wheeling every once in a while. Rather than buy something completely unpractical, like a Jeep Wrangler, I'd get a pickup so that I can haul and tow heavy loads, and carry stuff in the bed. And for all this I would get the Nissan Frontier- it's simply the best small truck you can buy. It looks great, has the awesome 4.0 liter Nissan V6 engine, and is quite capable of offroading- I know because a friend of mine owns one, and it easily keeps up with Jeeps. I'm not sure if I would lift it, but I would definitely invest in some larger BFG mud terrain tires. Slightly used Frontiers of the newer model can be found for $20K or less.

By the way, this list I've created here is comprised only of new cars I would get for $100K. There are tons of older cars I'd like to own as well, such as a Jag E type, 3rd gen Mazda RX-7, type 993 Porsche 911 (the last air-cooled one), E30 BMW M3 (the first one), and maybe even a 1970s International Scout. Problem is, these vehicles can be hard to find, and prices vary wildly.

$100,000? To me that is plenty of money.

The Daily Driver: Everybody needs a daily driver to get to work, school, whatever. Being the car that would receive the most use, I'd have to make it an Audi A5. Comfortable, more than reasonable performance and it is just so slick looking. Easily the nicest looking car in the Audi lineup, and that includes the R8 for me. (Gotta be in black). If they bring the diesel one the the US I'd have that.
$40 grand gone.

The "Schlepper": Everyone needs to carry stuff; be it groceries, people, hardware, pets or kids (same thing). In that vein I always liked the idea of the station wagon, space in the front for people and plenty of room in the back without the "soccer-mom" facade that comes with SUVs/minivans. I'd have to go with the Subaru Legacy Outback. It 's almost got the same heritage as a box on wheels as Volvo, awd definitely helps in the winter and the flat-6 gives should give the needed oomph when fully loaded. I'd say $15,000 is a pretty reasonable amount for a good used one, preferably 2005 up.

My Sunday afternoon cruiser: It needs to be a convertible roadster. It needs to be a classic. So what would it be? Triumph? MG? Nope, Datsun. The Datsun Roadster 2000 would do it for me. It's cute and cool at the same time, kind of like a Mini Cooper. And like the Cooper it even has racing pedigree. For me it is the epitome of the perfect "wind-in-your-hair" driving. I'm having a hard time finding an average price for one, but they don't seem to be any more than $8,000 for a common one. I'd be willing to spend double that if I had $100,000 for my garage to get one in good condition. Must be red or silver.

That leaves me with ~40 grand for whatever I want, and I feel like I've left out one thing and that is the "rip the eyeballs out of your head under hard cornering" barely legal trackday bruiser. But I don't know if I would go that route. First of all I don't live near a track, and secondly I more like the idea of the "visceral experience of driving" rather than pure performance. For me that wouldn't be a track-car at all really, but the kind of car where you wake up at 3am, have a coffee and then drive until dawn. I'm probably going to change my mind on this to something with more raw power, but right now I am pretty enamored by the old school Mercedes 190e 2.3, definitely in black. Not looking for a car to embarrass some kid who strapped a turbo to his Honda Civic at the lights (that would be nice), but for the joy of driving I think it suits what I would want.

I think three or four cars is probably about right. You need one to be both practical and usable everyday, in every season. For me thats the Subaru Impreza WRX STi I like the 2004/05 models but pick whichever one you want they are all fabulous to drive, have AWD , 5 seats and a big trunk. The fuel economy is not great but its not so bad that someone with 100K to spend on cars couldn't deal with it. Basically its the only car you need. thats a good 25K down. And I got 75 more to play with. I would have to get a Corvette. I have driven bunches of different sports cars and nothing offers the same combination of outright speed and fun handling. A new Z06 is way out of our price range(and waaaay to scary). But a C5 Z06 is not. 30K will get you an awesome example, and thats probably what I'd go for. So I've spend 55K and have 45K to go. I must have an lotus elise. I absolutely must. period. I would want the most euro one I could find, so a 2005(euro bumpers) with no power options is what I'd go for. Since they are soooo uncomfortable people never put miles on them and even the cheapest ones only have like 30K on the clock. Likewise they cost right around 30K, and thats the one I'd go for. I have 15K left. I have no idea what to spend it on. I don't have a classic in my garage and I gotta say there is just something about driving an old car that puts you back in touch with what drivng was all about. Truth be told, I just finished watching the Mecum Auction in Kansas City and I was floored by the number of classics for 15K, they may not have been top of the line models but if all you want is the classic car driving exerpience they get the job done. Personally, I'd get a '69 MGB, they are just so much fun to drive, and 15K buys me a concours example.

I'd get an Audi A5 2.0T Quattro and a BMW X5. Those two cars would do for me. Very Happy
