Snow and Sports Cars
On New Year’s Day, my wife and I were in Park City with Todd and Paul. Not expecting snow, we drove our Porsche Boxster over the 7,200 ft Parley’s Summit to get there. Then we were hit with one of the biggest snow storms of the year. Paul offered us to stay the night at his place, but stupidly, we turned him down and headed home. It was slow going and we got a lot of funny looks when passing someone in their SUV. The Boxster just settled into its winter tires and trucked

Unsexy Upgrade
Recently, I stood with an excited owner as he told me all the changes he still planned to make to his vehicle. There was a breathless list of exhaust parts and intakes, each with their expected power gains, followed by a studied consideration of coilers and “cranking up” the boost. The theoretical bill for all these changes would total many thousands. “What about tires?” I asked. “Oh,” he paused, a bit surprised by my question, “The tires are fine.” This is the problem with

Tuned to Perfection?
Our recent Focus RS film has garnered some great comments and showcased the on-going discussion of tuned cars versus factory set-ups. While we believe the only baseline for car testing is the way the car was sold to the public, we totally support and encourage owners to revise a car to their personal taste. Tuning is a massive business, and in this age of turbo-charged everything, “more” is as close as your OBD II port. However, this discussion also reveals bias about what

Driver's Choice - Mazda MX-5 Miata vs. FR-S
For nearly 25 years Mazda ruled the light-weight, rear wheel drive car category with the MX-5 Miata having the market all to itself. For 2016 Mazda has launched an all-new MX-5 that goes back to its roots. It’s smaller and lighter than the outgoing model and with a starting price of just $24,915 it is still an amazing value. But the MX-5 is no longer alone in the segment with the $26,100 Scion FR-S and $26,490 Subaru BRZ twins nipping at its heels. So when we were given th

Tracking & Drifting our FR-S
One of our favorite things about our Long Term FRS is the car’s approachable limits. A sad by-product of the in-car technology and horsepower wars is a long list of heavy cars with more power than the average person will ever use. The FR-S stands in stark contrast and asks the driver to extract what’s available. We like that. In fact, Todd likes it so much he bought this one. We know that some viewers equate drifting with a proper test of a car. We like drifting, but we do

Scion FR-S - Long Term #1
The Toyobaru trio (Subaru BRZ, Scion FR-S, and Toyota GT86) have received accolades across all of car journalism. Since their introduction they have been lauded as some of the best driver’s cars money can buy without breaking the bank. Here at Everyday Driver we’ve featured the car five times over the years and like it so much that it joined our Greatest Hits comparison with the EcoBoost Mustang. Now we are taking it one step further by adding one to our long-term fleet. T

The Subaru Question: WRX or BRZ?
We’ve always loved the “what-if” nature of car debates and started the show, in part, to illuminate the discussions car people get into when buying something new. In the real world of limited budgets, commutes, and kids, our cars have to do a lot more than just excite us. Thankfully, every now and then great cars face off at the same price-point. But rarely are they both from the same brand. Like many siblings, the new 2015 Subaru WRX and Subaru BRZ share parts and origin,
